Religion in Britain during Arthur's lifetime is often seen as a flowering of the Christian or as a struggle between Christian and Celtic on the one hand and between the Christian and the Germanic on the other, with Christianity inevitably winning. But there was also an underground religion, one which would survive the period in the form of "witch" cults but which were in fact holdover "fertility cults".
