Patrick was born into an aristocratic family, who were wealthy enough to ensure he was given a Latin education despite the fact that Rome was no longer a presence in Britain. He was kidnapped around or before the age of twelve by Irish raiders and served as slave there for many years.
Escaping from his captors as an adult, Patrick immediately returned to his home region to finish his education. When he was finished he convinced the local clergy that he was the best man to convert the Irish to Christianity.
Made a bishop, he traveled to Ireland. His first stop was his former captor, who killed himself. Continuing on, he made his way to the high-king at Tara. He was able to convert the king and all his court. He went on to be remembered as the patron saint of the island.
A deeply religious man, Patrick was also extremely intelligent. He proved the latter on several occasions. He convinced the high-king to accept Christianity. He arranged for a system whereby the abbots served as the religious heads instead of bishops. In an island already infiltrated with four bishops, Patrick was remembered for centuries as the man who converted Ireland.
