Son of Cadwallon the King of Anglesey, Maelgwn was brought to a monastery for education at the age of five. He learned Latin and much of the classics from Gildas.

After leaving the monastery he was thrust into a life of politics with several assassination attempts. Lucky and wily, he evaded them all and returned to the monastery to rethink his situation. Leaving again, he quickly adapted and mastered politics, becoming king after murdering his cousins. Maelgwn would go on to extend his realm onto the mainland and become the most powerful of the British kings.

Maelgwn was an intelligent and crafty man in difficult times. Good in his studies of Latin, quick in his understanding of politics, Maelgwn could survive anywhere. He found those less capable or flexible than himself to be amusing.
