Political Significance[]

Under Columba the monastery was a focal point of diplomacy between Dalriada, Strat Clut, and the Picts.

History[]

Columba was exiled to Britain in 563 and came to Iona with twelve followers. Having learned his lesson he received permission from the Pictish king as well as the people of Dalriada before breaking ground. The monastery was instantly successful, gaining a reputation for holiness, wisdom, and political acumen.
