Illtud was born to a wealthy family fallen on hard times. He managed to acquire a Latin education and had a natural affinity for literature but left school before he was eighteen.
After retiring from a career as one of Arthur's captains Illtud took up holy orders. He was the most accomplished British scholar of his generation. Eventually he became the most renowned teacher in Britain. He was responsible for Gildas, Samson, Paul Aurelian, and David's education, among many others.
A small man in a big man's world, Illtud spent most of his early adulthood trying to measure up, though he was fortunate that he never suffered from the little man complex.
Having proved himself, he took a more enlightened look at his life and decided to give up being a warrior and turn his attentions toward scholarship.
