As with all the kings in the first generation after Rome, Gwrwst was raised in a society that was fully decentralized. Only villages were still functioning units. Gwrwst would have endured periodic raiding, probably from the Irish.

Upon reaching the age he could bear weapons, Gwrwst would have joined with a raiding party. Returning home or moving to a location that was heavily ravaged by raiding, Gwrwst leveraged his warrior experience into a contract with local villages - protection in exchange for food and supplies. With this he was able to attract warriors and eventually build himself a sizable teulu. Stability gave him the power to expand his territory until he had built himself one of the most powerful British kingdoms in Britain.

At forty-three, Gwrwst had grown old and tired. When he humiliated a young King Arthur he did not follow it up by killing the upstart or forcing him to obeisance. As a result, Arthur was able to recover. Arthur would return and utterly destroy Gwrwst and his entire war-band.
