Nothing is known of Cadwallon's childhood. As the son of Einion he would have had the best of everything and been trained from his earliest youth in weapons, armor, tactics, and diplomacy.

Succeeding his father, Cadwallon finished the job Einion had started and drove the Irish from Môn. In the process, he carved a kingdom for himself that was one of the most powerful on the island.

Cadwallon, King of Guenodotia, once gave his son Maelgwn over to Gildas for training in a monastery. This was to protect him from dynastic struggles.

A royal son born into a family still fighting for survival, Cadwallon understood the value of a good work ethic. He also grasped the wisdom of education. He did not send his son to Gildas so that he could escape his responsibility but rather so that he would be prepared for it.
