Nothing is known of Brendan's early life. Undoubtedly he trained in a monastery and excelled in his studies at an Irish monastery.

Brendan was known as a wanderer, traveling as far away as Iceland . He was also a locally respected man as well. In the synod convened to excommunicate Columba, he was the lone vote to banish him instead.

One famous legend has it that he came to Gildas for advice and was forced to wait outside all night.

An adventurer and explorer, Brendan was a man not afraid to voice a different opinion. Nor was he arrogant. Though he went on long voyagers in a tiny ship he had no qualms waiting outside of Gildas' monastery at night in the dead of winter to see him.
