Born to a family of Germanic migrants, Berhtwald lived in a village along Hadrian's Wall. When his village resisted giving tribute to Arthur, the king retaliated by attacking it mercilessly. Berhtwald found himself in a burning building. It was only because of Arthur's heroics that he survived. Since that day he has considered himself permanently in that man's debt.

Taken into Arthur's teulu as soon as he was old enough, the tall Berhwald immediately proved himself valuable and and unquestioningly loyal to Arthur.

Shy, quiet, and a little awkward in a crowd of Britons, Berhtwald has a hard time socializing. He thinks of Arthur as his father, and Anwas hangs around him as much as he can.
