The day was intended to be one of prayer for the dead.
Held on November 2, All Souls' Day was a day for remembering the dead. Falling as it did after All Saints' Day, it was a means of comforting those souls that might be in purgatory. To that end, sharing soul cakes with the poor or lighting candles for the dead served to comfort them. Where it was possible, dinner would be left on the table so that the dead could eat.
